I think you are talking about 2p orbitals.

For example, if you take a carbon atom, it has one 2s orbital and 3 2p orbitals; 2p_{x, }2p_{y and }2p_{z }before hybridization.

if you combine one 2s orbital + one 2p_{ }orbital you will have two sp hybrid orbitals(arranged in linear 180) and, two unhybridized 2p orbitals left.

if you combine one 2s orbital + two 2p_{ }orbitals(2p_{x }+_{ }2p_{y }) you will have three sp^{2} hybrid orbitals(arranged in trigonal planar 120) and, one unhybridized 2p orbitals left.

if you combine one 2s orbital + all 2p_{x, }2p_{y and }2p_{z }three of them, you will have four sp^{3} hybrid orbitals(arranged in tetrahedral - 109.5) and, no unhybridized 2p orbitals left.
