the standard upward opening parabola with vertex (3,-2) is
y+2 = a(x-3)^2, where a>0
for a downward opening parabola, a<0
for a rightward opening parabola,
x-3 = a(y+2)^2 where a>0
for a leftward opening parabola
a<0
but there's an infinite number of parabolas with that same vertex, if you rotate the parabola to an angle other than 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. They all have an xy term
