Question

length is 5x+4 on the bottom, going up the left side is 2x, across 4x+1, up x, across ____, down _____...... whats the area???

The fifth side would be 5x + 4 - (4x + 1) = x + 3

 

The sixth side would be 2x + x = 3x

 

Think of the area as two rectangles. Area = Length x Width

 

The top rectangle's area = x(x + 3) = x^2 + 3x  The bottom rectangle's area = 2x(5x + 4) = 10x^2 + 8x

 

If we add both rectangles together, we get 12x^2 + 11x.
