How many of the coins are dimes?

A student has 54 coins in a bank. There are only quarters, nickels and dimes in the bank. If there are twice as many dimes as quarters and three times as many nickels as quarters, how many dimes are in the bank?

let x = number of quarters

 

dimes = 2x          (twice as many dimes as quarters

 

nickels = 3x         (three times as many nickels as quarters

 

x + 2x + 3x = 54    (there are 54 coings in the bank

 

6x = 54

 

x = 9           (9 quarters

 

2x = 18        (18 dimes

 

3x = 27        (27 Nickels
