how do i do these chemistry questions?

  1. Draw a molecular model of ethane, the alkene with molecular formula C2H4.
  2. Then, orient the model so that the double bond lies in the plane of the paper and the hydrogen atoms are pointed toward or away from you.
  3. Then, draw an accurate 3D representation of this molecule using lines, wedges, and dashes for bonds.
  4. Next, replace one of the hydrogen atoms on carbon 1 in your model with a chlorine atom.
  5. Then orient the model so that the double bond lies in the plane of the paper and the hydrogen atoms are pointed toward or away from you.
  6. Then, draw an accurate 3D representation of this molecule using lines, wedges, and dashes for bonds.
  7. Replace a hydrogen atom on carbon 2 with chlorine atom and orient the model so that the double bond lies in the plane of the paper and the hydrogen atoms are pointed toward or away from you.
  8. Then, draw an accurate 3D representation of this molecule using lines, wedges, and dashes for bonds.

After drawing three structures, answer these questions.

  1. From step 4, does it matter which hydrogen atom on carbon 1 you choose to replace with chlorine? Do you get the same molecule or an isomer?
  2. Does it matter which hydrogen atom on carbon 2 you choose to replace with chlorine? Do you get the same molecule or an isomer?
  3. What structural feature of the chloroalkene molecule accounts for your answer to the previous question?
  4. If your answer to question 3 indicates that replacing different hydrogen atoms give you different molecules, draw the other isomer of C2H2Cl2 you would get by substituting chlorine for the opposite hydrogen atom on carbon 2. Is this molecule a constitutional isomer of the original C2H2Cl2 you created or a different kind of isomer?Justify.
