The particle theory of matter says that all matter is made up of particles, which are called atoms. Atoms are the smallest particles that make up everything around us, from water to the air we breathe. There are many different types of atoms, and all these different types of atoms are known as the elements. Atoms of each element behave very differently - for sample, at room temperature, iron atoms form a solid, but oxygen atoms form a gas.
