Monochromatic light has a wavelength of 2.85 × 10^7 m in air and 5.22 × 10^7 m in clear liquid. If the ray of such light enters a clear liquid pool at an angle of incidence of 30.0°, what is the angle of refraction?
1 Expert Answer
We first need to find the index of refraction of the liquid given by n=5.22/2.85 = 1.83
We then use Snell's Law (1)sin(30)=1.84 sin θ
Therefore the angle of refraction = 15.8 degrees

In addition to the wavelengths' exponents missing a negative sign in order not to be longer than radio waves, something is majorly wrong: the index of refraction is less than 1 from these numbers. Going from air to liquid, the wave speed decreases while frequency stays constant, so the wavelength in liquid should be smaller, not larger.07/25/20
