At the first meeting of the chess club, the 10 members decided that everyone in the club should play everyone else one time to determine the best players for inter-school competitions. How many games had to be played?

The first person will play everyone else.
That is nine games.

The second person will play everyone else except the first against whom s/he already played.
That is eight additional games.

The third person will play everyone else except the first and second.
That is seven additional games.
