The easiest thing is to start with the whole numbers and add those first. In this case you have 4 for Andrea and 3 for Tim. 4+3 =7 Now the only thing left to deal with are those pesky fractions! In this case 3/4 for Andrea and 1/4 for Tim. Here's the rule for adding fractions... add the top numbers together and leave the bottom numbers the same. With 3/4 + 1/4 you would add the 3 and the 1 together on top and leave the 4 on the bottom the same for your answer. 3/4+1/4 = 4/4 Then you would need to add together what you got from adding the whole numbers of apples and your fractions of apples to get the answer. This would be 7 + 4/4. So your answer would initially be 7 4/4 apples... However 4/4 is a fraction that can be made smaller, it is the same thing as 1. So your addition equation would be 7+1. The answer to the equation is 8!
