There are a few equations we need to consider:
(1) pH + pOH = 14
(2) pOH = -log[OH]
Since we know that the pH is 5.22, we can find the pOH by using equation (1):
pOH = 14 - pH ∴ pOH = 14 - 5.22 ∴ pOH = 8.78
We can rearrange equation (2) to solve for [OH]. if we multiply each side by (-1) and then raise both sides to the power of 10, we get:
10-pOH = [OH].
∴10-8.78 = [OH]
∴[OH] = 1.66*10-9
