With beginner students I start at the lower half - this part is closer to the hand, richer in tone and easier to control. Tapes do help. I put just two tapes. One at the balance point and the other at the middle of the bow. This way marking center points of weight and length. Tapes near the tip and near frog I find excessive - the wiring itself is a "tape" and a reference point.
Staying midway between bridge and the fingerboard is correct. I always remind that the bow still should be closer to the bridge, since all beginners tend to slide with their bow to the fingerboard.
At this point explain why it happens and give 3-step motion of the right hand to keep the bow straight throughout whole length.
My beginners do use the whole bow.
