Are facial expressions critical to communication in sign languages?

Being a guy who is very economical about facial expressions, I often catch myself thinking as I watch deaf people communicate that I couldn't (and wouldn't) do those things to my face even on a bet. Those exaggerated grimaces are a huge no-no for me, whatever the circumstances.

Is communication at all possible and how much information is lost if somebody is signing with a straight (or almost straight) face?

Most hearing people use facial expressions without even knowing it. As a hearing person signing you need to let the deaf person know your tone of "voice" with facial expressions. It can get confusing if you are telling somebody you are sad with a smile on your face.

It's quite common for hearing people to be uncomfortable in showing facial expressions. It could be taboo in many hearing cultures. Perhaps they perceive as vulnerable to reflect our inner feelings on our faces which many may interpret as character weakness.

However, facial expressions and mouth movements are considered essential parts of ASL grammar. Without these, the messages are not as clear and the ability to hold the watcher's attention greatly diminishes. In the Deaf culture, showing facial expressions and mouth movements (also known as "mouth morphs") are strongly encouraged and appreciated.

Just because you use facial expressions in ASL doesn't mean you have to use it when speaking English. That's up to you.
