 An ant is crawling on your ruler. He is on the 6 cm. mark and he crawls back to the 2 cm mark. He does this in 2 seconds. What is the distance he crawls? What is his speed? What is his velocity?

Distance Crawled = final distance - initial distance = 2cm - 6cm = -4cm

Velocity = distance traveled/ time (direction matters with velocity) Velocity of Ant = -4cm/2sec = -2 cm/sec

Speed = magnitude of velocity = |-2 cm/sec| = 2 cm/sec

Just remember that speed doesn't care what direction you are traveling but velocity does
