Make sure you are asking someone for a letter of recommendation that honestly knows you. If you have never spoken to the principal of your school, that would not make for a stellar recommendation. Ask a person you know that will light up with excitement when you ask them for the letter. That will make for a great letter.

When writing recommendation letters for former workers, I usually ask for their resume and any additional information that would be helpful in making sure that I am speaking to the strengths of the person. Additionally, I ask folks if they have areas they believe needs improvement or if there is an opportunity for growth whether it be in education, or in their profession. This not only speaks to the individuals willingness to learn and improve but attest to the individuals strength in recognizing their areas of growth.
