For example, the molecular formula for pure oxygen is O2.
That means that there are two oxygen molecules in the molecular formula.
From the periodic table the atomic weight of Oxygen is 15.999.
Therefore the molecular weight of pure oxygen (O2) is ( 2 x 15.999) which equals 31.998.
