The Science Guide
First off, I'm pretty sure you really mean "x2 + 2x - 10 = 0", yes? Otherwise, it has no real solutions.
So, look for something squared "buried in" the equation:
(x+1)2 = x2 + 2x + 1 = your equation + 11
So, we have:
x2 + 2x - 10 = (x+1)2 - 11 = 0
(x+1)2 = 11
(x+1) = ±√11
x = ±3.32 - 1 = -4.32 or 2.32
