Politically, you can say that countries are autonomous when they have their own system of government and thus, taxation system, military, and currency, for example.
Autonomy literally means having the freedom to govern one's own ideas. This can be applied to both animate and inanimate objects.
For example, sometimes people can feel that they lack autonomy because of the influence of certain people or restrictions placed on them.
A pertinent example of autonomy in today's society is in autonomous vehicles. These are vehicles that can operate without human control. Self driving cars are a popular example of this.

Autonomy is having the ability to take control of your actions without the influence of others. It is being confident in your decisions to the point where you do not question or doubt your decision. Autonomy can be applied academically, socially and emotionally.
For example, autonomy can be seen in students who remain focused on their education even though they are exposed to peers whose actions can influence their academics and behavior; and yet, they choose to remain academically and socially separate from those peers.
