We never learn what began the feud between the Capulets and Montagues. Based on what you know about this time period, write a paragraph imagining what caused their conflict. Include specific details, not just a general account. You can write it like a story.

The best part about this assignment is that it is open ended! You can choose any conflict you would like to start the feud as long as it "makes sense" with the story and the time period in which is was written. I put "makes sense" in quotation marks because we all know how petty human beings can be. It could be that the smallest disagreement set off this generations long feud we see in Romeo and Juliet.

If you are having trouble coming up with a conflict, think about the reasons for a fight you've witnessed in your own life! What has made another person jealous before? Angry? Sad? Resentful? All of those emotions are surefire ways to enable conflict.
