Ca(OH)2 + HNO3 --> Ca(NO3)2 + H2O
Write the balanced molecular equation
2Ca(OH)2 + HNO3 --> Ca(NO3)2 + 2H2O
Now, split soluble compounds into ions & cross out the spectator ions on both sides of the complete ionic equation.
2H+ + 2NO3- + Ca2+ +2OH- --> Ca2+ + 2NO3- +2H2O
Net ionic equation: 2H+ + 2OH- --> 2H2O
This will always be the net ionic equation for a strong acid – strong base reaction, and the pH of the resulting solutions will always be 7.
