Find a number such that 2 less than one-sixth the number is 1 more than one-fourth the number.

n/6 - 2                        This is 2 less than one-sixth 

n/4 + 1                       This is 1 more than one-fourth

 

n/6 - 2 = n/4 + 1

n/6 - n/4 = 3                Multiple both sides by 12, the common denominator

2n - 3n = 36

-n = 36

n = -36

 

The number is -36.
