Hello Tucker,
The point slope form of a linear equation is
y-y1=m(x-x1)
The y-intercept form of a linear equation is
y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept
Given point (-5,-3) [(x1,y1)] and the line must be parallel to y=8/5x-3 [y=mx+b]:
Because the question calls for a line parallel to the given line y=8/5x-3, the slope of the line that we are seeking will have the same slope. (Think railroad tracks).
Thus m = 8/5
Using the point slope formula
y-y1=m(x-x1)
y-(-3)=8/5(x-(-5))
y+3=8/5(x+5)
Use the point slope and solve for y.
Y+3=8/5x+40/5
Y+3=8/5x+8
Y=8/5x+5
The Line is now in y=mx+b format.
If you were to graph this line: y+3=8/5(x+5)
and this line: Y=8/5x+5
you would discover they are two different ways of expressing/describing the same line.
