To solve it, first simplify:

.70 p + 1.50 (p + 40)

.70 p + 1.50 p + 60 = 170

2.20 p + 60 = 170

 

Subtract 60 from both sides:

2.20 p = 110

 

Divide both sides by 2.20

p = 50

 

So 50 bags of popcorn were sold, and 90 sodas.
