To make the number smaller you would want to use as many of the 7 cent stamps as possible.

116/7=16.57

16 of the 7 cent stamp covers $1.12 add 1 5 cent stamp and you will have a total of 17 stamps.

You will have over payed with this method. Mark M's method, apparently, is a better one.

Determine the largest multiple of 7 lest than 116.

 

13 seven cent stamps = $0.91

5 five cent stamps= $0.25

 

$0.91 + $0.25 = $1.16
