A rectangular box is built by cutting out square corners from a " by " piece of cardboard, then folding the resulting flaps up to form the height. Let  represent the sides of the square corners being cut out. Express the volume of the box as a function of .    What will the volume be if " squares are cut out?With  squares cut out, the volume will be  cubic inches.

Draw the diagram. You know that the sides of the box will be x and that the base will be (8-2x)(12-2x)

Therfore, the volume will be (8-2x)(12-2x)x

Plug in x = 1 in equation above.
