$6= price of pants

$4= price of shirts

$62= total amount paid

6x+4y=62 (shirts are 6 dollars an pants are 4 dollars total amount spent is 62$)

x+y=13  there is a total of 13 items bought 

 

y=13-x

 

6x+4(13-x)=62

6x+52-4x=62

2x=10

x=5

 

5+y=13

y=8
