a children's store is selling pants for $6 each and shirts for $4. Brenda bought 13 items and paid $62. How many shirts did she buy?

The answer is 8 shirts. I'd like to know the explanation to this word problem in an equation.
$6= price of pants
$4= price of shirts
$62= total amount paid

I really hate explanations like this, because they never explain step to step, like uhh you're supposed to give directions. where did 2 come from? why did you have to automatically multiply 4 with 13? give details, no one is just looking for the answer but to find a way to do it:/
