Since one of the tags is "post lab separation techniques", I will be assuming sand is used to filter out a product. One example of why sand would be too high is if there is not enough product to be filtered. When this happens the product will becomes "trapped" in the filter. Depending on the experiment, you may be able to use solvent to move some of the product into a collection vial. The other scenario, a percentage of sand being too low, would result in the opposite effect. By having a low percentage of sand, the product will flow quickly through the sand layer, resulting in the product not being as pure as it should be.
