Ammonium chloride is an ionic compound.
Water is a polar covalent compound.
When ammonium chloride enters into water, there are ion-dipole intermolecular forces present between the ammonium chloride and the water. Eventually, the intermolecular ion-dipole force overcomes the ionic bond in the ammonium chloride, and the ammonium chloride separates into positive ammonium ions (NH4+), and negative chloride ions (Cl-).
