Josh is finishing remodeling his home. The last step is the flooring. He has a room 17 ft length by 20ft width. He is trying to avoid the fireplace that protruding out from the wall in the room that is 2ft length by 5ft width. Each plank is 4ft long and 8in wide. How many planks will it take to floor the room?

To determine the number of planks, we need to divide the area of the room by the area of the plank

# of Planks = Room Area / Plank Area

Room Area = total area - area of fireplace footprint = (17 * 20) - (2 * 5) = 340 - 10 = 330 sf

Plank Area = 4 * 8/12 = 2.67 sf

# of Planks = 330 / 2.67 = 123.75 ≈ 124 Planks
