A quotient is the result of dividing.
(x / 3) - 6 = 2
⇒ x / 3 = 8
⇒ x = 24

A quotient is the result of division. Whether the quotient comes from x / 3 or 3 / x is not clear. So I shall do both.
x/3 - 6 = 2 Multiply everything by 3
x - 18 = 6
x = 24
Now for the other one
3/x - 6 = 2 x ≠ 0, multiply everything by x
3 - 6x = 2x
3 = 8x
3/8 = x
