In the first example, a 2 L soda bottle has 2 x 33.814 oz, or 67.628 oz. The key to Algebra word problems is in the units. The answer in this case, unit price, is in cost per unit. Cost is in $ and the units are ounces. The answer must be in $ per ounce, mathematically, $/oz. The problem becomes $.99/67.628 oz, or .014 $/oz. Rounding to the nearest cent, the correct answer is $.01/ounce.
Similarly, the second problem, assuming the 6 pack is 101.4 ounces, would be $2.59/101.4 oz. or .025 $/oz, rounded off to the nearest cent, $.02 per fl oz.
For the third problem, $3.49/144 oz works out to $ .024/oz, rounded off to $.02 per ounce.
KEY POINT: keep track of the units in word problems. Don't forget to round off correctly as instructed, dropping off anything less than 5 and rounding up any digit 5 or greater.
