For Math, Physics, and anything else with equations...
The number is -13/5.
Remember:
- "less than" means to subtract.
- "more than" means to add.
- "times" mean to multiply.
- "is" means equals.
So, if we say our number is x, then 10 less than a number is 3 more than six times the number becomes:
x - 10 = 3 + 6x.
From here, we
- Move like terms to one side
- Solve for x.
x - 10 = 3 + 6x
==> x - 6x - 10 = 3
==> -5x - 10 = 3
==> -5x = 13
==> x = -13/5
