Hi Nicole--
6 kids were late. Here's why:
"5 per cent of 120" can be shown as this proportion:
5/100 = n/120
which means " 5 out of 100 is equal to ?? out of 120."
to solve, you cross multiply to get 100n = 600 (because 5 x 120 = 600)
divide by 100 and you get that n = 6.
The other way to do it is 120 x .05, which is the same as doing 120 x 5 but with the decimal point moved 2 places on the place value chart.
