Does religion distort Gods message?

Suppose there is a god, and he did send his son to earth to die for our sins, or mohammad to spread his word, or enter your subject matter that a religion is based around. Why would he make it so complicated, and difficult for every person to know the way, the truth and the light? People, ESPECIALLY around that time had no education. Would he, who created us in his image, really have wanted a clique of scholors, to be needed to explain his teachings to us? Or would he have put it in a simple place, and make the message simple? Wouldn't he put it in all of us? Something accessible to all, if only you looked? This is the quintisential event and message of existence, and we're meant to be part of this complex, complicated, contradictory, group of religions, and hopefully pick the right one. Which is highly weighted by where you're born. Add the obvious, "If there is an all powerful god, he'd understand this confusion for those that wish to understand, but are smart enough to question the controlling, corporations that religious entities have become."
