The answer is not all that cut and dried, as to be entirely true or false. Patented medications with FDA approval usually have cheaper generic alternatives, while keeping their patents. At least that is the case with most medications, the exceptions being the very expensive drugs for chemotherapy and such. Since we can't lump all patented drugs in the same category, the answer to this question is "false, but true."
