First off, the syntax is a lot wordier than the other two languages. This is intensional to make program code appear more like natural English. Secondly, it is designed to be easier to handle and manipulate character and string data. It is also able to process a very wide variety of file types, including sequential, indexed, random access and (via interfaces) databases.
