A pizza of diameter 16 inches has an area large enough to serve 4 people. What is the diameter of a pizza with an area large enough to serve 12 people.

This is a question that I have trouble figuring out on my MATHCOUNTS packet. Could someone help me find the answer to this problem, and show me how it's supposed to be solved.

Hi Cantrell,
Hi Donald,
While thinking about this problem last night, I came up with a simple solution to the actual question.
√2r doubles the area of a circle, √3r triples the area of a circle, √4r quadruples the area of a circle and so on (you of course have to use the formula A=(pi)r2
To answer the question asked, √(12/4)*16=√3*16=1.73205*16=27.7128 inches for the diameter without actually finding the area. Just my observation.

The area isn't proportional to the diameter. 48 in pizza is more than 3x bigger. The area increases as r2
