The Dutch language, even though it has been influenced by a bit of Latin and French throughout history, remains by far a Germanic language. Dutch is historically a Frankish language (spoken by the Franken who crossed the Rhine from Germany into the Low regions) and is part of the same Germanic linguistic family as German, English and Scandinavian.
