Think About what "the opposite" of a number means. 

 

What is the opposite of 10? Well, that would be -10

What is the opposite of - 20? That would be 20 

 

It's the same number, just on the other side of zero. (Think about a number line. These two numbers are in the opposite directions from zero.) 

 

So what is the opposite of Stacy's thermostat setting of 74? That would be -74. 

We need to choose a range that surrounds this number. The left hand number needs to be MORE negative and the right hand number needs to be LESS negative.
