How can you take the color out of polyester or dye it white?

While Jesse gave you a great answer (I am also a Chemist by Degree but also have worked with dyeing fabrics and yarns), you get much more consistent results if you can dye natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, flax, wool, etc..

First of all, you never want to use bleach. Bleach's main ingredient is sodium hypochlorite which damages polyester by removing the outer layer and exposing the inner yellow core. Instead, use sulfur-based removal such as sodium dithionite, also known as sodium hydrosulfit, found in Rit Color Remover or thiourea dioxide, found in Jacquard Color Remover.
