take the 5 pint glass that contains 2 pints and pour the 2 pints into the 3 pint glass

the 3 pint glass has 2 pints and the 5 pint glass is empty

fill up the 5 pint glass

pour 1 pint from the 5 pint glass into the 3 pint glass to fill the 3 pint glass up

the 5 pint glass now contains 4 pints !!!
