the multiplicative inverse (or reciprocal) of a number is the number inverted.

• The multiplicative inverse of 5 is 1/5
• The multiplicative inverse of -2/27 is -27/2

The product a number and its reciprocal is 1:

• 5*(1/5) = 1
• (-2/27)*(-27/2) = 1

The word they are looking for is "reciprocal".  The reciprocal is the number as a fraction "flipped", or inverted.  Here are some examples that I think will be clearer than any words.

 

1/2 ~ reciprocal is 2/1, or just 2

2/3 ~ 3/2

4 ~ 1/4

7/16 ~ 16/7
