You can convert 2 1/6 into a vulgar (or top-heavy) fraction first, 2 = 12/6 and so 2 1/6 = 13/6.

 

Since the denominators are equal, you can simply add the numerators together:  5 + 13 = 18.

 

So, 5/6 + 13/6 = 18/6. 

 

The HCF (Highest Common Factor) of 18 and 6 is 6 (since 6 is the highest number that can divide into 18 and 6 and leave a whole number answer).

 

Using the HCF of 18 and 6, we can simplify 18/6 down to 3/1 or 3.
