The discount is the 30%, so you just need to find 30% of 120.  Here are two ways to do that:

 

1. First way, you just write it as an equation, 30% of 120 is the same as .30*120, or $36.
2. The second way, which some students prefer, at least to start, is to set it up as a ratio.  Percents are always parts out of 100, and your sale is the part out of the whole $120:

• 30/100 = x/120
