One way to solve this question is to set up a proportion and solve for the missing variable using cross-multiplying. For example: (7/8)/4.35 = 4/x. In my proportional the yards of fabric are the numerator while the cost is the denominator. Now all you have to do is use cross-multiplication to get an equation that you can then solve. After cross multiplying you get the equation 17.40 = (7/8)x. Now all we need to do is multiply both sides by the reciprocal 8/7 to find out that 4 yards of fabric cost about $19.89
