So all planets orbit a star. If an object orbits an object that orbits a star (a planet), that object is called a satellite. Now if we remove our moon (its official name is Luna) from the gravitational boundary of the earth, and allowed Luna to orbit the sun on its own, the moon may still not be a planet. This is because a planet must meet certain size and gravitational requirements. Luna may not be quite big enough to do this. It is smaller than Mercury (the smallest planet) but it is bigger than Pluto, a dwarf planet.
Hope this helps.
