Yes, the progestin in the combination oral contraceptives can cause increased appetite and weight gain. It is dose dependent, meaning the higher the amount of progestin in the medication, the more weight gain. Additionally, progestin can stimulate menstrual flow (and is actually used in women who are unable to start puberty), leading to irregular periods and spotting.
Both of these side effects you are experiencing could mean that your dose is too high. Ask your provider if it is possible to lower this medication dose without the risk of getting pregnant.
