You probably a far beyond this point now, but Paul was exactly the character you mentioned. He started out as Saul, persecuting followers of Jesus, then comes to faith, has a name change to Paul and eventually becomes a life-long missionary planting churches across the known world. And yes, at the end of the story he is killed for his work by execution in Rome. Paul isn't one of the original 12, but considers himself a peer and apostle all the same.

Of the 12, the three that come to mind are Judas, Thomas and Peter. Judas, if you're looking for a fairly dark character, Thomas if you're focused on changing ways, and Peter as the committed friend that frequently makes mistakes.04/01/20
