Christianity - Would anyone give me some advice/insight on the twelve apostles?

I'm writing a story and would like to name my main character after one of the apostles. In short, this character is sent on a mission to right a wrong that he was responsible for. He also has a spotted past that he is trying to repent for. I haven't decided whether or not he dies at the end of the story. ​ I'm wondering which of the Apostles would relate to this the most, if any of them? ​ Thanks very much for any insight!

Of the 12, the three that come to mind are Judas, Thomas and Peter. Judas, if you're looking for a fairly dark character, Thomas if you're focused on changing ways, and Peter as the committed friend that frequently makes mistakes.

You probably a far beyond this point now, but Paul was exactly the character you mentioned. He started out as Saul, persecuting followers of Jesus, then comes to faith, has a name change to Paul and eventually becomes a life-long missionary planting churches across the known world. And yes, at the end of the story he is killed for his work by execution in Rome. Paul isn't one of the original 12, but considers himself a peer and apostle all the same.
