During this medieval time-period, France was not unified in any practical way. The Duchy of Normandy, led by William the Conqueror, conquered England independently from the King of France. The Duke of Normandy was thus also King of England, independent from the King of France. Thus, France had never 'conquered' England, but the Normans definitely changed the political landscape of England, effectively replacing the Anglo-Saxon ruling elite with a French Norman ruling elite. With higher society now speaking French, old English disappears from the historical record, only to reappear with the loss of the Norman territories as the ruling elite embraced a mixture of English and French culture and language.
