At least one of the arguments in favor of the existence of one or more gods was presented by the Classical Greek philosopher, Aristotle. Aristotle argued that the natural state of all matter is to be at rest. In order for anything to change from a state of rest to a state of movement, they must be acted upon by an external force. By this reasoning, Aristotle proposed that for the universe to have been set in motion, there had to have been a 'Prime Mover', which can be interpreted to mean there had to be one or more supreme beings who, acting as an external force, changed the matter of the universe from being in a state of rest to a state of movement.
