I would send them to some of the Psalms. In times of trouble, Psalm 46 is great because it shows them that God is always a refuge and strength when they are in trouble. Psalm 23 is also a wonderful comfort because it assures the reader that when God is their shepherd, he will care for them and provide for them no matter what happens in life. Psalm 1 is a wonderful encouragement because it presents two ways to live, and the blessings or hardships that come from choosing one path or the other. These are great passages. In the New Testament I like Hebrews 13:5 because it shows us that if we trust God he will not desert us. Romans 8:28 is great because it shows us how God can even use the bad things that happen in our lives to accomplish his good purpose in the world. I hope each of these is helpful!
Blessings to you!
